Why Central Coast Families Choose Medivik
Finding the right paediatrician involves more than finding a clinic close to home. For Central Coast families, it means having access to specialist care in a convenient location, with appointments that work around your family’s needs. Here is what sets Medivik apart.
Specialised Care Without the Long Drive
Our West Gosford clinic sits on the ground floor of the Riverside Park Office Tower at 69 Central Coast Highway. It is an easy trip from Gosford, Point Clare, Kariong, Narara, Erina and the Peninsula, so your child can see a specialist paediatrician without a long drive down the M1 or a day off school.
Time to Be Heard From the First Visit
First consultations run for around 40 minutes, giving Dr Akkera time to review your child's history, examine them properly and talk through your concerns. Your child sees the same paediatrician at every visit, and Dr Akkera sends a detailed report to your GP and any allied health professionals involved.
Telehealth Follow-Ups That Fit Family Life
Once your child has been seen in person, many reviews can happen by secure video call from home. Paediatric telehealth appointments mean fewer missed school hours and workdays, while keeping the same level of care and continuity.

Questions We Often Get From Parents on the Central Coast
What's the wait time for new patients on the Central Coast?
At Medivik’s West Gosford practice, new patients are typically seen within weeks rather than months. Some private practices have waitlists of three to six months for a first appointment.
Parents and carers can check availability through Healthengine or by contacting the clinic.
How much does a private paediatrician cost on the Central Coast?
At Medivik, a first consultation with Dr Akkera is $650, and with a valid GP referral the Medicare rebate of $265.60 brings your out-of-pocket cost to $384.40. What you pay overall depends on how many visits your child’s concern needs.
A single concern, such as a newborn feeding question or recurring tummy pain, may need only the 40-minute first consultation. An ADHD assessment pathway takes several appointments, so the total is higher.
Ask your GP for a referral before booking, and check current fees on our pricing page.
How long is a paediatric referral valid?
Under Medicare referral rules, a GP referral to a paediatrician is generally valid for 12 months from your child’s first appointment, unless your GP specifies a different period or an indefinite referral for an ongoing condition. A referral from another specialist is typically valid for three months.
Should I see a paediatrician or a child psychologist for autism assessment?
For a child under 13, a developmental paediatrician is often the more practical starting point, because they can check for medical causes and, under Medicare item 135, create a treatment plan that opens rebates for allied health support. Both paediatricians and psychologists can assess for autism, and many children end up seeing both.
Take a three-year-old who isn’t yet using phrases, rarely responds to their name and has had frequent ear infections. A paediatrician would typically check hearing and growth first, since hearing loss can look like a communication difficulty. If the assessment supports autism, an item 135 plan may give access to Medicare rebates for up to 20 allied health treatment sessions, such as speech pathology or occupational therapy.
Change one fact and the better starting point shifts. For a 14-year-old with no medical or developmental concerns who mainly struggles with friendships and anxiety at school, item 135 is no longer available, and a psychologist-led assessment may suit better, with a paediatrician involved if medical or medication questions come up.
Dr Akkera is trained in ADOS-2 and can talk through which autism assessment pathway fits your child at a first consultation.
Can a paediatrician prescribe medication for ADHD?
Yes. In NSW, paediatricians can start and manage ADHD medication, and your GP may continue prescriptions under a shared care arrangement once treatment is stable.
