Is telehealth free with Medicare?
Telehealth appointments are not free, but Medicare rebates do apply to eligible consultations with a specialist paediatrician. What visits may be appropriate for telehealth?

Physical examinations that require hands-on assessment may still need an in-person visit.

What happens during a telehealth appointment?
A paediatric telehealth appointment follows the same structure as an in-person consultation. The paediatrician will discuss your concerns, review your child’s medical history, observe your child on camera, and provide assessment and recommendations. They may order investigations, provide referrals, or prescribe medications as clinically appropriate.
At Medivik, all telehealth appointments are conducted by Dr Vivek Akkera, a consultant-level specialist paediatrician. Consultations are 45 minutes and are designed to be thorough, unhurried, and family-centred.
Can I get a prescription via telehealth?
Yes, prescriptions can be issued through telehealth appointments when clinically appropriate. Electronic prescriptions can be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy or provided as a token for use at any Australian pharmacy.
At Medivik, prescriptions are issued only after thorough clinical assessment. Dr Akkera will discuss all medication options with you during the consultation and ensure you leave with a clear understanding of the treatment plan.
Do I need my camera on for telehealth?
Yes, video must be enabled for paediatric telehealth appointments. The paediatrician needs to see your child to conduct a proper clinical assessment and ensure the consultation meets the same standard of care as an in-person visit. If technical difficulties prevent video connection, the appointment may need to be rescheduled.
